My top 5 #SelfCareSunday activities

#SelfCareSunday

Self Care Sunday has become synonymous with the idea of doing activities that help relax your mind, body and soul. It’s become a big ritual on social media and as a digital content creator myself, it’s something I always put time aside to do.

Here are my top 5 favourite #SelfCareSunday activities that you can try out;

Wash Day

As a natural hair girlie, I looooove taking care of my hair. I always encourage black women to put together a hair regimen/ routine that can help with maintaining and promoting the health of their hair. Doing hair during the week is time consuming if you’re someone who works from Monday to Friday, which is why Sundays are the best days to do your hair.

I usually co-wash on Wash Day depending on what kind of state my hair is in during the week. I am however, going to deep condition my hair with the Shea Moisture Manuka Honey and Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Masque today which has always left my hair feeling good and has my coils looking super defined.

Skincare Routine

Skin is surely at the top of the self care pyramid right next to having regular wash days. Taking care of your skin is very important because it’s its the first thing that people look at when they see you. I won’t lie, I gave up on taking care of my skin because I felt like NOTHING worked. I have oily and sensitive skin so I’ve always had to try out different products to see how they’d react on my skin – and I’m pretty certain that only 20% of those products have worked.

For my skincare routine, I usually try out masks (whether avocado, collagen, turmeric and clay) that help improve the overall look of my skin. I’m currently using Sunlight to wash my face – this is probably the most non-harsh soap on the market for me. I also use the Quret Korean masks which I got from Dischem and have reviewed here if you’re looking to see how well it works. I also follow a simple toning process where I use Rosewater and Witch-hazel to help with preventing breakouts and minimizing dark marks.

I recommend a proper skincare routine for all your skincare needs – and do what works for you.

Read A Book

I’m going to be very honest – reading is particularly not the most consistent thing I’ve ever done during Selfcare Sunday. My concentration level is below zero but I’m trying to get back into the swing of things by trying to finish my latest read Winnie Madikizela-Mandela 491 Days – Prisoner number 1323. This book is filled with so much history from both Mama Winnie’s personal experience in prison during apartheid and teachings about how the segregation system worked at the time.

Now when I speak of reading during Self Care Sunday, I don’t mean read the entire book all at one go (because personally that’ll never be me) but read a chapter or three, and start incorporating the reading into your weekly schedule (preferably after hours if that works for you).

Listen To A Podcast

There’s thousands if not millions of podcasts available on the internet that touch on a spectrum of issues. One of my favourite platforms that generally have a wide variety of podcasts, is Spotify. Personally I love listening to the radio on Sundays but when I’m in the mood for a cultivating conversation, I just tune into my favourite podcast on the app.

One of my favourite podcasts has to be Problematic AF hosted by my friend Bonolo Ntlatleng. This podcast is great for us millennials and Gen Z’s who are always interested in controversial topics and normalizing the engagement around them.

Podcasts are great in that, they come with a difference in opinion which is so refreshing from what commercial radio stations provide every single day. Do yourself a favour and look for a podcast today across Spotify that you can tune into every Sunday.

Series Catch-Up

This is probably the most common Self Care Sunday activity for a lot of people because it requires minimum effort lol. I love watching series but I usually do so during the week after work while others find it more convenient to do so on weekends.

I’m currently watching Greys Anatomy S17 and just wrapped up Grownish S3 (which I must admit, ended on a weird note but alas). If you’re not sure what tickles your fancy, head over to Netflix and search through the catalogue to find what interests you from comedy, horror to drama and documentary.
