My 3-month loc update

My 3-month loc update

It’s been a young minute since I last blogged about my fro-to-loc transition. It’s been a very slow 3 months of having my starter locs but I’m not complaining because natural hair patience is a thing!

Just yesterday I went in for my appointment with the loctician at Indalo Nubian Naturals in Protea, Soweto. I had previously booked to have a regular loc wash, twist and style combo which only costed me R230. Prior to that, I had my first interlocking session to start the process of fast tracking my locking process.

What most people would consider interlocking, is usually done with a crochet where the hairs are “crocheted” within the same place to help the hairs lock into each other which would then form a single loc. The type of interlocking that I had done was the finger method which was less painful than the crocheting method where tools are used. The problem with crocheting is that it can damage the hair as a result of the pulling and tugging that the needle does in order to achieve a steady loc.

Here’s my feedback on my 3-month period.

Any Difference In Length?

There’s really no difference yet when I’ve had to unplait my loc styles however, as time goes, I know it’ll show considering that locs are one of the ways in which you can achieve length retention. Personally, as ling as my hair is healthy, that’s all that matters right now.

What Products Am I Using?

Unlike when I still had my hair in an afro state, I don’t use as many products (yay because I hate product build up!) I’m currently using Stylin Dredz Oil Moisturizing Spray alongside the Afri Pure Avocado Oil to help my hair get some much needed nutrients. Both these products are light in usage and do not cause any sort of build up. By the time you’re due for your appointment, there’s really not that much build-up to remove which makes the loctician’s job a lot easier.

Does The Styling Hurt?

Yes and No. Like any other hair styling, it definitely hurts the first time after the first session especially if you’re not a fan of protective styling. My first style hurt so much because my scalp wasn’t used to it but it really hurt for a day and then everything was fine.  I’m currently on my third protective style and it doesn’t hurt. My scalp doesn’t get irritated either.

I’ll definitely keep updating you guys on how things are going. I have also deleted my YouTube channel where I often vlogged about my experiences (for my own reasons) so be sure to be on the look out on my blog and Instagram for more updates.
