To Be Spicy or Not To Be Spicy? Smirnoff Spicy Tamarind Has Got You!

It’s not a lie that South Africans love a bit of spice – both literally and figuratively. From the delicious chakalaka topped on your seven colour Sunday plate by uMagriza, to umgosi wasekhaya after every family reunion – spicy flavours are all around us. While the December weather has us hiding away from the heat, one of the world’s number one vodka brands, Smirnoff has turned the heat all the way up for you to enjoy in a variety of ways.

Just recently, Smirnoff Spicy Tamarind, the proudly sweet, shamelessly spicy variant  sponsored the Roast of Pearl Thusi, in collaboration with Comedy Central which aired on the 8th of December.  I had the pleasure of being invited to the live recording of the Roast weeks prior which took place at the Lyric Theatre, one thing I can confirm is that the heat was definitely served on a silver platter and with shots taken at Pearl Thusi and her fellow panelists that had us stunned (in a good way of course).

The Panelists’ Impressive Shots

The Roast included personalities such as David Kau, Tol Ass Mo, Farieda “Pharoahfi” Metsileng, Rob van Vuuren, Mam’ Lillian Dube, Idols’ “Mr Nasty” Randall Abrahams, and entertainers Phat Joe, Zee Nxumalo, Zodwa Wabantu, Busiswa and Donald, all took and dished the spicy sizzle in equal measure. While the Roast definitely made me chuckle, I can’t help but be impressed at just how Zee Nxumalo, Zodwa Wabantu and Farieda delivered and left no crumbs when taking up the podium.

“It’s Getting Hot In Here” For Pearl Thusi

Now what would the Roast of Pearl Thusi be without a grand entrance? Never in a million years did I think I would ever see Pearl Thusi perform her own song which was fiiiiiiiiiiiireby the way. Whether a fan or foe of the Black Pearl, Pearl Thusi’s willingness to be sauced, roasted and then some, was admirable. One who can definitely handle the heat, Pearl said that she saw the Roast as “a sort of lifetime achievement award,” showing her standing in pop culture.

Overall, the Smirnoff Spicy Tamarind really served the heat but I handled it like a pro. From my spicy surprise delivery by comedian Thabiso Mhlongo, to the airing of the Roast of Pearl Thusi, I give Smirnoff Spicy Tamarind a 10/10 for being super extraaaaa this December and ensuring that we feel the heat.

The Perfect (Heated) Serve

Why all the spice? Because Smirnoff Spicy Tamarind is changing the game when it comes to spirits. More than just a unique flavour, Smirnoff Spicy Tamarind plays in the shot space as an alternative to the usual suspects. It’s fresh, it’s new and it’s a little bit extra. And that’s the point.

Curated for the vibe shifters, Smirnoff Spicy Tamarind encourages Mzansi to mix things up this Dezemba. Whether as a cold shot or in a cocktail, we could all do with a bit of spice.

For a drink that’s best served chilled, Smirnoff Spicy Tamarind has certainly turned up the heat.

Drink responsibly. Not for sale to persons under the age of 18.
